What activities can you expect at Cam’s Camp?
Setting up a nature camp
Learn how to set up a nature camp using a bushcraft tarp, ropes, tent pegs and any other materials you can find. Add in a couple of hammocks and you’re set for the day! Once set up, we’ll find out about the wildlife surrounding us, using small mammal tunnels, a camera trap, invertebrate observation magnification pots, and an acute sense of observation and curiosity!
Wildlife exploration walks
Discover the plants and animals of Loxley and Rivelin valleys and beyond. But not without the help of ecology equipment such as bat detectors and those trusty wildlife identification guides. Will you skilfully forge the river to have a closer look at a species that’s caught your eye, without getting your feet wet?
Restoring nature
It’s only once you know what species are there that you can help create the environment and habitats they need to thrive. Cam will guide you through flora and habitat surveys and fieldwork. The data we collect will inform our nature restoration ideas and how to implement them together. Sometimes it can be as simple as planting some species that are missing or struggling, or adding to the greenery with a bit of horticulture and gardening. Nothing feels better than knowing we’ve given a little back to nature!
Nature action planning
Create your very own nature action plan about something that matters to you. In this series of creative discussions and craft sessions, you will:
(1) reflect on how you feel about nature
(2) identify an environmental problem you’d like change for the better
(3) identify your vision for environmental change
(4) find evidence backing the environmental problem and vision you’ve identified
(5) identify who can help you realise your vision
(6) design 1 or 2 concrete actions you can take to solve the environmental problem and take steps towards achieving your vision for a better world!
Wildlife treasure hunts
Solve riddles and follow clues that’ll take you near a plant or animal track to identify - and then it’s up to you and your team to put your ecological identification skills to the task and uncover the next species on the hunt!
Tree hugging game
You will be guided to your tree with the utmost care by a trusting partner whilst blindfolded, and experience how your sense of touch, smell and hearing are enhanced to absorb everything around you when your eyes cannot see. Are you able to re-trace your footsteps to the tree you hugged whilst blindfolded?
Who will win in this nature versus polluters prison ball game?
“Save the planet” prison ball
The Maze Game
Can you make your way to the other side of the maze? The game leader will only reveal the pathway to those who can answer their challenges. As a team you will take turns to daringly step into the maze, one square at a time. You will encounter animals (some friendly, some less so!) and solve challenges together to be able to find the secret path. You’ll need to call on your problem-solving skills, teamworking and knowledge of nature! Are you up for the challenge?
Sound mapping
Can you map the nature sounds you can hear all around you? How does sitting quietly in nature taking it all in feel?
